Board of Review
Advancement promotes three goals in the scouting program: citizenship, growth in moral strength and character, and the mental and physical development of the Scout. Recognition is given when
our troop holds a Court of Honor. A scout performs several tasks before his rank advancement is earned.
The biggest difference between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts is that it is the Scout’s responsibility to pursue his rank advancement. Before the rank advancement is earned, the scout will have requirements
signed off in his merit badge book. He will sign up for a conference with the Scoutmaster before he signs up to have his Board of Review.
The Scout will need to be in Class A uniform and have his scout book for both the Scoutmaster conference and the Board of Review.
The Scout should not expect to receive his Board of Review on the same night he has a Scoutmaster conference. The Board of Reviews are scheduled once a month. This is posted on
the troop calendar and website. There is a signup sheet at the meetings. Additional Board of Reviews will be scheduled prior to a Troop Court of Honor if needed. A scout should not expect
to have a Board of Review 15 minutes before the close of a meeting or immediately after his Scoutmaster conference. If activities are planned during the meeting the Scout must take the lead,
and excuse himself from his patrol for his Board of Review.
What can a Scout expect at a Board of Review? A committee of three adults will verify that he has completed the rank requirements, service hours, and Scoutmaster Conference. The review will
include discussions about the Scout Oath and Law, how he feels the troop functions, and promote further progress in the scouting program. The Board of Review typically lasts 15 minutes. The
Scout’s book is held for signatures of the Review Board, and is returned to the Scout at the close of the troop’s meeting.
A valuable resource for the types of questions that are asked and how the review differs for each rank is available on the Internet at www.macscouter.com/Scoutmaster/BoR/
