Philmont

Philmont 2011

Philmont is the Boy Scouts of America's premier high-adventure base that challenges Scouts with more than 200 square miles of rugged New Mexico wilderness. The scouts pick one of about 35 itineraries that typically look something like the following:

Start off with a taste of the old west and the thrill of shooting a high powered 30.06 hunting rifle using shells that you load! Stop by Crooked Creek homestead and milk a cow. Then on to Beaubien Camp for a two day layover that includes a horse ride and delicious chuck wagon dinner - real food! Don't miss Waite Phillips famous Fish Camp Lodge as you hike over Fowler Pass on the way to crazy Crater Lake. Here, climb a thirty foot spar pole using logger's spikes before enjoying one of the rockin'est campfires on the Ranch. Your last staffed camp is Zastrow, site of Philmont's high tech land navigation program, a Dutch oven dessert feast - more real food - and a real motivating ceremony. For more information regarding treks see Philmont’s website at: http://www.scouting.org/highadventure/philmont.aspx

Participating Scouts have the opportunity to explore the high country in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico; experience the thrill of climbing mountains over two miles high; participate in a wide array of activities that teach Scouting skills—archaeology; backpacking, camping, climbing, fishing, forestry, horsemanship, Indian lore and much more; and develop leadership, group dynamics, wilderness problem-solving and outdoor skills.

Participating parents have an opportunity to not only have a similar opportunity; they also share in an experience where they see their son grow before their very eyes. I encourage all parents to consider going on this trek with their son.

The Ann Arbor Council puts together a number of crews either made up of all one troop or of multiple troops if a troop does not have enough scouts for their own crew. Each crew consists of 8 scouts and 4 adults. The entire Contingent will leave Ann Arbor on Saturday, June 25, 2011 and travel to Philmont by Amtrak train. After a short bus ride, we will arrive on a Sunday in Cimarron, NM, home of the Philmont Scout Ranch. The next eleven days will be filled with a memorable backpacking experience that no Scout will ever forget. The Council has reserved Crew space with Philmont. Those interested in being part of the Contingent should bring their completed Council Contingent Application and the deposit. Youth applications need to be signed by the Scoutmaster. Scouts must be 14 years of age by January or have completed the 8th grade by the start of the trip. It is recommended that Scouts be 1st Class rank or higher by the start of the trip.

The cost of the trip will include the Philmont fee, transportation, crew training sessions and most meals. There are a very limited number of camperships for those Scouts truly in need of financial assistance. Please advise the Council if a Scout needs assistance when applying for a position in the contingent and a High Adventure Campership form will need to be completed. Signup day for Philmont will be at the Ann Arbor Council Service Center. Those interested in going should bring application and deposit.
