Awards & Recognition
Outstanding Leaders? We Have ‘Em! What does it take to be an Outstanding Leader?
“The nominee must be a registered Scouter and active in his/her Unit. He/she must have rendered
noteworthy service to youth in the Unit. The nature and value of “noteworthy service” may consist of a single plan, project or decision that contributed vitally to the lives of large numbers of youth
within the Unit or for cumulative contributions to a small group over an extended period of time.”
Two individuals from Troop 457, exemplifying all the best, were recognized at a ceremony held on
Thursday, March 1st, 2007 at Knox Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor, and received this award.
Committee Chairperson, Jack Cook.
“Jack sets a good example in all that he does and at all times. He regularly attends campouts, works on merit badges, and really makes an effort to
know the Scouts. He is the kind of gentle leader that helps the boys think and make good decisions by his example. He will ask a Scout to explain
his reasoning so that if there are flaws, he can see the flaws for himself without them being directly pointed out to him. Jack’s attention to detail,
his friendly manner, his jolly spirit and his ability to see clearly when differences of opinion present themselves make him a perfect Committee Chair. Beyond,
Committee Chair, Jack is not afraid to take on any job that needs to be done - nothing seems to faze him. He is a strong and willing member of our Troop, a humble man, who likes to help out, but
doesn’t seem to see himself as anyone too special. He has gone above and beyond committee chair work – he works with the boys directly on merit badges, attends camping events regularly and
assists the Scoutmasters whenever he is requested.” Our second award winner is an
Assistant Scoutmaster - Mark Eby.
“Mark works with the first year Scouts to help them advance to First Class rank. He is also active in Cub Scouts which helps with the new Scouts
transition. Mark is a Merit Badge counselor for all the Citizenship merit badges. Mark uses his professional skills to help the boys work through any
differences and disagreements. Mark is also active in youth baseball and still finds time to go on most campouts. Mark has taught the boys about honesty
and making ethical decisions and about being responsible Scouts. Mark has influenced the lives of many Scouts for the better. Scouts who would have
maybe left Scouting have stayed and become Patrol leaders and Den Chiefs after working with Mark.” Troop 457 is blessed to have many wonderful leaders and parents that make a difference in
the lives of Scouts every day. We are glad to have the opportunity to recognize the work they do and the differences they make in our troop.
Congratulations to these two Scouters!

Darrell Hoover earns Wood Badge Beads Another dedicated leader of Troop 457 has successfully completed the BSA Wood Badge Course
and earned his 'beads.' Darrell Hoover participated in the practical course in the Fall of 2003. Cathy Arehart was the Troop Guide for Darrell's patrol, the Ursa Major Bears. After completing the
intense 2-weekend training segment, participants undertake 5 projects that benefit the troop and community while embedding the skills learned during the course. Congratulations, Darrell!
Wood Badge is the highest level of adult leader training offered by BSA.
Outstanding Unit Leader Awards
“Going All Out for Scouts” was the theme for this year’s Munhacke District Awards held on March 3, 2005 in Hamburg at the monthly Roundtable meeting. This annual event offers those in
scouting the opportunity to thank the volunteers who have gone over and above to help the scouting program at the Troop, Pack or Council level. This year’s recipients of the Outstanding
Unit Leader Awards from Troop 457 were Gary Marquardt and Pat Markus. Both have given so much to the troop in the past year. Although the award is given at the reception in Howell,
one of our members was unable to attend. Since this is a “surprise” for the person receiving it, those in attendance decided to honor both recipients at the Troop level as well by reading the
testimonies of those who nominated these scouters. Jack Cook then presented the pin to our award winners during our Troop formation. Nancy Howard, also from our Troop, has taken
responsibilities on at the Council level in many areas and her efforts were also recognized. She received the District Award of Merit
which is generated from the Council level. Nancyis a 2001 recipient of the Outstanding Unit Leader Award from Troop 457.
