Scout Uniform

Scout Uniform

Why do we wear the uniform?
Why does a football player?
Why does a soldier?
Why does a Scout?

Because it identifies us as part of a team.

A football player wouldn’t want to give the ball to the wrong person because he didn’t know who his teammates were. I’m sure a soldier wouldn’t want to go into battle without knowing who was on his team.

In Scouting we wear the uniform not only as a show of teamwork but also as a means of openly identifying ourselves with the principals to which we are committed.

Wearing a uniform doesn't mean that we're all alike. We come from different ethnic and racial backgrounds. We have our own religious beliefs and political views. We are individuals with our own family traditions and loyalties. So the uniform is not intended to hide our individuality. But it is a way we give each other strength and support. It is a bond that ties us together in spite of our differences. It is a way of making visible our commitment to a belief in God, loyalty to country and to helping other people. When we wear the uniform where everyone can see us, we are openly identifying ourselves with those values. We stand together, not alone, in encouraging others to live by those same principles. If you need an example of this, find a picture from National Jamboree; 80,000 Scouts, all in uniform!

Next time you think the uniform looks “geeky”, find a member of the Armed Services and tell them that their uniform looks geeky. I’m sure they would like to have a conversation with you about your opinion.

Now I’ve heard all the excuses for not wearing the uniform. The “I forgot or I was running late” are just two examples that show that you are not following the Scout Motto of “Being Prepared.”

Now, lets all be on the same team and wear our uniforms with pride!
